Apple’s place in the enterprise
Apple Computer is holding is 2005 Worldwide Developer Conference, and as usual the company goes to great lengths to keep its secrets. Steve Jobs sycophants aside, there are important changes that need to be made, developers say. Bugs, user interface inconsistencies, and better server documentation are all high on the real-world priority list. Other users say Apple needs an upgrade for its storage server and related software (from ADIC) — building an all-Apple SAN takes more work and …

To work with upcoming dual-core processors, a computer scientist in Canada has developed micro-C++, which translates some new extensions for the venerable C++ programming language in order for programs to run multiple threads. Peter Buhr’s work, funded by the Gelato Foundation (Intel, Hewlett-Packard, and others), isn’t the first of its kind but may have a decent chance at standardization.

Changing of the Intel guard
Paul Otellini tomorrow officially becomes the first non-engineer to be CEO of Intel. He’s already begun reorganizing the chip giant from a manufacturing mindset into a “markets” mindset, although the markets all seem headed in the direction of dual-cores and new features over speed. Insiders say his tack represents a mild change from predecessor Craig Barrett, and that was by design. (How much do you think about chips in your daily IT gig?)

Hyperthreading footprints expose Intel P4 users
Operating systems that use the hyperthreading features of Intel’s Pentium 4 are vulnerable to security attacks based on timing, a Canadian researcher found. Basically the timing of one thread’s actions can give clues about what other threads are doing, and that information combined can reveal passwords to malicious applications. Intel, as expected, is playing down the threat, which it says is rather impractical given the many easier password-breaking techniques in the IT wild. Either way, …
