EU rejects software patents proposal

The European Union’s Parliament voted 648 to 14, with 18 abstentions, against a controversial new patent law. The proposed law was to legalize software and business-practice patents, which are already common in the US but are often criticized for allowing patents of obvious things and methods (for example, Amazon.com’s infamous shopping cart patent). A notable opponent to the proposal was Linux creator Linus Torvalds.

Lotus to bring ‘activity inbox’ to mainstream

The late 1990s saw faxes and voicemail move into traditional email inboxes with the unified messaging trend.
