C&L: Bernard Pech leaves Siebel for salesforce.com

Bernard Pech is the new CTO of salesforce.com, switching sides after serving as CTO of rival Siebel Systems.

Sun Microsystems re-hired Michael Lehman as its CFO. He left in 2002 and was replaced by Steve McGowan. Now that McGowan left, Lehman is unretiring.

WebSideStory acquires Visual Sciences

WebSideStory, known for its funny name and its data monitoring services alike, is buying Visual Sciences for $57.3 million in cash and stock. The deal gives WebSideStory new capabilities in real-time data visualization. Visual Sciences’ tools will integrate with WebSideStory’s marketing software, although a timeline wasn’t announced. The company will be a subsidiary, not just swallowed up, officials said.

Decru launches Fibre, SCSI security boxes

Decru, a storage security firm owned by Network Appliance, announced new versions of its DataFort appliance series. The FC1020 is for Fibre Channel storage, specifically for large tape backups. The S115 is suited to smaller SCSI storage and backups. There’s also a new 2.5 version of the Lifetime Key Management System to help customers organize their encryption and decryption tools.

There is new information that eBay may acquire Skype for $2 billion to $3 billion. It’s an interesting pairing. Will Skype continue to have independent prospects, such as with eBay’s acquisition of PayPal? Or will its technology become a buyer-to-seller means of communication, also shared with Craigslist, which is 25 percent owned by eBay? Microsoft acquires Internet voice startup

Why should you care about Microsoft’s acquisition of VoIP start-up Teleo for an undisclosed sum? Because it could be the starting point of a greater effort to radically change corporate communications. Sure, Windows already had NetMeeting, etc.; but Teleo-inside-Vista could affect enterprise VoIP rivals, not just Skype. For example, VoIP could become just another Windows method that any application (CRM, database, etc.) could call — no pun intended.
