IPv6 has security issues that sysadmins need to start thinking about, expert Van Hauser said at the Hack In The Box conference this week. Companies that aren’t using IPv6 networks still need to realize that modern versions of Unix and Windows Vista do support it, so that alone can create some issues. For example, IPv6 shares IPv4’s vulnerability to packet monitoring attacks, and even the use of IPSec will not solve all problems. IPv6 will arrive sooner than people realize, he …

You’ve heard of WINE, the Windows Emulator, which lets Windows applications run on Unix-based operating systems, but do you know about ReactOS? It’s a decade-old, non-profit project to build an open-source clone of Windows itself. It’s taking a long time time because Windows is huge, it keeps changing, there’s an ongoing code audit to ensure nothing is copied from Microsoft, and the ReactOS team are mostly volunteers. Still, they reached a milestone this week, releasing networking support …

Windows Vista isn’t the only major OS upgrade on the horizon. Hewlett-Packard this fall will release HP-UX 11i v3, which is their first major Unix upgrade in three years. (Unix, analysts note, is doing just fine despite the popularity of Linux.) Scalable processor support and more integration with rival IBM’s middleware are planned as new features. HP also plans more automation and virtualization support in version 4, which is still a couple of years away.

Leap.A is a new Trojan-style virus circulating for the Apple Macintosh OS X platform. Claims about it being the “first” Macintosh virus are bogus, but it’s likely to be the first of many in a new trend, security experts say. Still, given OS X’s roots in the Unix-based FreeBSD operating system, it is still far more secure than any version of Windows.

Windows bumps Unix as top server OS
Rarely are market share reports so interesting while so unsurprising. A case in point: IDC’s latest report found that Windows server sales amounted to $17.7 billion in 2005 versus $17.5 billion for Unix. That’s the first time Windows led. Also intriguing: Linux beat IBM’s mainframe z/OS for third place, $5.3 billion to $4.8 billion. Vendor-wise, the leaders were IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Sun Microsystems, in order. Low-end servers and blades grew the most.

Unix sales still result in billions each year, but with Linux growing at a much faster rate and Windows constantly maturing, is Unix doomed to become a niche player–the Apple of enterprise OS choices? (Disregard for now the irony that OS X is Unix.) Or is this akin to the “death” of mainframes and tape? Article
