iPhone tops smartphone heap in July

According to a report from iSuppli, Apple’s iPhone outsold other smartphones during the month of July and equaled sales of the most popular feature phone, LG’s Chocolate. According to the report, the iPhone outsold every BlackBerry handset, the entire Palm portfolio and any individual Motorola, Nokia, Samsung or other carrier-branded models. iSuppli, however makes the distinction that the iPhone is not truly a smartphone since it is not designed to allow users to load third party software onto the product. And if a product isn’t designed for third party apps, it clearly isn’t possible to load unsigned apps onto the thing (*wink*). Admittedly, the iPhone was released in July amid an unprecedented media frenzy. For that reason, it comes as no surprise that the iPhone topped the charts in July thanks to the hype: the real question is whether or not the phone can keep that momentum going well into the holiday season.
