SSDs get down to business with HP

Solid state hard drives (SSDs) are expensive, have a limited number of justifiable uses and probably don’t offer enough of a performance boost to justify their cost. So it should come as no surprise that the enthusiast community has embraced the flash-based drives as the latest geek status symbol. An SSD might be the laptop equivalent of 20″ rims but that hasn’t stopped more than a few businessmen from wanting a little “bling” to go with their notebooks. To that end, HP has announced that it will begin offering SSDs as a configurable option in all of its professional series notebooks. If you’ve got $1000 to spare (and if you’re even considering an SSD, you probably do), you can add a 64GB SSD to your new HP Compaq 2710p, 2510p, 6910p or 8000 series laptop. After all, a SSD-equipped laptop is probably at least a tad more practical than yet another diamond-encrusted Rolex.
